Afghan Olympians welcomed home
14 August 2012
Afghanistan's Olympic athletes have been welcomed home at a special ceremony at Kabul's Ghazi stadium.
The six-strong squad, five men and one woman, competed in athletics, boxing, judo and taekwondo.
Pajwok news agency reported that thousands of fans, officials and parliamentarians turned out to greet the team.
Rohullah Nikpai, who won a bronze medal in taekwondo's 68 kg category, received a particularly warm welcome.
Nikpai, who grew up as a refugee in Iran, won Afghanistan's first ever Olympic medal - also a bronze- in Beijing in 2008.
Another Afghan taekwondo competitor, Nesar Ahmad Bahawi, lost the bronze medal match in his class of the competition in London.
