Book launch: The Lightless Sky

28 October 2015

London

SOAS Afghan Society host a conversation with Gulwali Passarlay, the author of The Lightless Sky: An Afghan Refugee Boy’s Journey of Escape to a New Life in Britain.

At the age of just twelve Gulwali Passarlay was sent away from Afghanistan by his mother, to save his life. Smuggled into Iran, Gulwali began a twelve-month odyssey across Europe, spending time in prisons, suffering hunger, cruelty, brutality and nearly drowning in a tiny boat on the Mediterranean. He finally arrived in the UK, no longer an innocent child but still a boy.

Here in Britain, he was fostered, won a place at a top university, and was chosen to carry the Olympic torch in 2012. Now a young man, he is intent on changing the world.

Venue: Djam Lecture Theatre, SOAS, Thornhaugh St, Russell Square, WC1H 0XG.

Time: 7pm

Tickets: Free.  For more information visit the event Facebook page
