Murder in the Hindu Kush: George Hayward and the Great Game

18 April 2012

2 Belgrave Square, London

The Royal Society for Asian Affairs hosts a presentation by the freelance travel writer and photographer Tim Hannigan on his new biography ‘Murder in the Hindu Kush: George Hayward and the Great Game’.

The British explorer George Hayward was one of the most mysterious and intriguing of all the travellers, spies, soldiers and charlatans who played “the Great Game”, the cold war fought amongst the deserts and mountains in the wild space between the advancing frontiers of the British Raj and the Russian Empire in the 19th Century.

The author’s own travels in Hayward’s footsteps, - through Kashmir, Xinjiang and northern Pakistan - bring the story up to date and reveal how the echoes of the Great Game and British imperial policy in Kashmir still reverberate in this troubled region of Asia today.
