Screening & talk: Narkomen - Heroin Addiction on the Silk Road

This documentary exposes the problem of heroin addiction in Tajikistan through a personal story of Mirzo and Mamadkhon, two drug users from a small village of Porshniev in Gorno-Badakhshan region. For the last two decades many young men in the region have been battling with heroin addiction. For many the battle is already lost.  Panelists:  Emily Winterbotham is a Research Fellow in the International Security Studies department at RUSI. For the past six years she has been based in Kabul, most recently as a Political Advisor for the European Special Representative, and previously as a Researcher for the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit. Her work focuses on violent extremism and insurgent networks in South Asia, peace processes, regional geopolitics, and issues of human rights and justice. She has also conducted research on transitional justice, human rights and women's rights and social protection in Afghanistan and the region.    William Lawrence is Project Manager of the EU's Border Management Afghanistan Project (BOMNAF). For the last eight years he has been based in Tajikistan and Afghanistan working on programs supporting trade, counter narcotics, and regional cooperation and development.  Note about producers: Malgorzata Skowronska has completed her Masters at the Department of War Studies. Her academic interests focus on organised crime and drug trade in Central Asia. She has traveled extensively in the region and speaks Polish, Russia, and English. Matt Traver is a Hong Kong born British-American filmmaker. He has recently completed 'Tales from the Steppe', a collection of five films shot in Central Asia which has since screened at fourteen festivals throughout Europe and the US.
