Talk: The Challenge of Change in Afghanistan

01 October 2014

London

In the inaugral talk of the Afghanistan Studies Group's 2014-15 academic session, H.E. Dr. Daud Yaar, Afghan Ambassador to the UK will talk about the challenge of change, providing detailed insights into the socio-economic dynamics of Afghanistan and possible ways on how to deal with forces that inhibit progress.

Socio-economic change is not a new phenomenon in Afghanistan. Since 1870-80, the country has experienced several episodes of change, mostly imposed from above on the country and its people. However, every time, there has been an attempt to bring change to Afghanistan, a violent backlash and reaction has taken place, leading to a step backward. In his research, Ambassador Yaar examines the challenge of change in Afghanistan and why  every episode of change is followed by collapse. His talk will focus on the roots of reaction to change and how we may deal with the forces that inhibit progress.

Born in Kabul, Dr. Yaar holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Cologne, Germany. He has held academic positions at the Kabul University and the California State University - East Bay. Appointed as the economic advisor to the Office of the Chief of Staff of the President of Afghanistan, Dr. Yaar became the Director of Policy and Oversight at the National Security Council Office in 2010. He became the Director General of Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2011, and came to London in 2012 as Ambassador.
