Talk: Gathering Strength; Conversations with Afghan Women

13 October 2013

London

Professional photographer Peggy Kelsey launched the Afghan Women’s Project after meeting a delegation of Afghan women in Austin, Texas in 2002.  She felt that the strength, humour and resilience of these women was contrary to the media image of Afghan women as helpless victims.  She travelled to Afghanistan the following year and created a photo-documentary chronicling the narrative histories of forty women.  In 2010, she revisited the country to meet additional women and gain new insights.  Her book Gathering Strength: Conversations with Afghan Women was published in October, 2012.

In this talk, she will share the stories of the interesting women she met.  They include refugees, business women, parliamentarians, returning Afghan expats and a defence lawyer.

Venue: Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, London WC1R 4RL

Tickets:  £5 in advance, free to members. http://www.conwayhall.org.uk/talks-lectures
