Talk: Secret Peaks, Afghanistan

27 June 2013

London

In the summer of 2012 a group of mountaineers from Afghanistan's Secret Peaks project travelled to Wakhan Corridor in north-eastern Afghanistan in order to climb in previously unexplored valleys.  The main aim of the expedition was to raise positive awareness about Afghanistan, its natural environment, culture and people.  They say the month-long expedition enabled them to discover not only the beauty of this extremely remote region but also the fragility of the mountain ecosystem and the vulnerability of local communities living in this harsh and unpredictable environment. Malgosia Skowronska, who led the project, will be talking about the team's journey through mountain regions of Tajikistan and Afghanistan, through cultures of Tajik, Wakhi and Kirgiz people.

Also speaking at this event will be Mollie Hughes, one of the youngest Britons ever to climb Mount Everest.

Venue: Ellis Brigham Mountain  Sports, 10-12 Southampton St, Covent Garden, London WC2 7HA
