Talk: War in Afghanistan - Learning from the Soviets?

18 March 2015

London

In December 1979, Soviet troops entered Afghanistan with modest objectives to subdue the civil war, but were instead locked into a bloody 10-year war.

At London's Imperial War Museum, author and former ambassador to Moscow Rodric Braithwaite joins the BBC’s Caroline Wyatt to discuss his insight and research into the Soviet withdrawal in 1989, the similarities to the recent UK experience of war in Afghanistan and if there are any lessons that we can take from the Soviet experience.

There will be a chance to view display War Story: Afghanistan 2014 after the event.

Venue: Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road, London SE1 6HZ

Time: 7.00 - 9.00pm

Cost: Free

Seats must be reserved in advance via the IWM website, here
