Skateistan launches into print

26 July 2012

Kabul based charity Skateistan has won plaudits and prizes for its educational work and its wonderful documentaries charting the progress of its students.  This week, in London, it is launching its first book 'Skateistan:The Tale of Skateboarding in Afghanistan'  describing how the project has developed and grown over the past five years.

The launch will include a Q&A session with founder Oliver Percovich.  When he first arrived in Kabul with his skateboard in 2007, Oliver was overwhelmed by enthusiasm shown by young Afghans wanting to take up the sport.  He started teaching them, eventually setting up a co-educational charity providing boys and girls with both skateboarding lessons and more conventional educational courses.  The charity stresses that skateboarding is simply the "hook" for engaging with hard-to-reach young people.  Many of its pupils are youngsters who work on the streets of Kabul.  Around 40 per cent are girls.
